You improve your photography not only by taking pictures but by studying what pictures you have taken…

Take all of the images you have taken and select the best 100. From the 100, select the best 20. From the 20 select the best 6. These 6 images becomes your all time greatest images you have taken so far. Ask yourself the question, ‘what do these 6 images tell the viewer about me’? I learnt more about my photography by doing this then I did taking thousands of pictures.

For me I always return to these 3 image I took in Cambodia,

There are more ‘happier pictures’ that I took in Cambodia during that period but they are less memorable to me. What does it say about me?

Hello Bird

I caught this image when I was traveling in India earlier this year. One of the places I visited was Fatehpur Sikre, 1 hour out of Agra which is the home of the famous Taj Mahal. I can’t wait to travel again as I think I have made some progress in the last 9 months with my photography. Certainly if I were to visit India again (and to the same places) I htink my images will be very different now. Definately the equipment will also be different.

Featured Photojournalism – Jama Masjid, New Delhi 2008

Jama Masjid 2008

I took this image during my 2008 Tour of India’s ‘Triangle’ of New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. This one was taken at Jama Masjid in New Delhi. It was mid-afternoon and the sunlight was very nicely diffused making it perfect for these kind of images. The challenge in getting these kind of images is to establish a rapport as soon as possible. I looked this man right in the eye, pointed at my camera (asking for permission to take the photo), he nodded and I clicked. Be polite, be quick and be thankful….

To India we go……..

OK. About a month ago I went to Cambodia for a week. Came back with some fantastic pictures. Next week I am off to spend 10 glorious days in India. This trip will be different from Cambodia with many different considerations from a photography standpoint (I’ll elaborate in later posts). The equipment I intend to bring are as listed:

1 x Canon 1D Mark III
1 x EF 16-35mm f/2.k L II
1 x EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L
1 x EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS
1 x Speedlite 580 EX II
2 x battery LP-E4
1 x battery charger LC-E4
1 x Epson P-2000 Viewer (with 40 gig worth of storage)
12 gig total CF card

That’s the ‘will bring’. Now we have the ‘may bring’:

1 x laptop
1 x external hard disk
1 x second body

Now comes the tough part, clothes (and other such stuff):

1 x hiking boots
2 x thermal socks
3 x t-shirt
1 x long sleeve thick shirt
2 x pants
1 x jacket
1 x very long scarf
1 x gloves
1 x woolen hat

Assortment of pharmaceuticals
1 x swiss army knife
1 x torchlight
1 x book

Anyway, can’t think of anything else at the moment. Will update if I do.
